Although I graduated from high school several years ago, I have not been far from the education field. Following graduation from Heritage Christian High School in 2004, the Lord showed me through different means that college would have to wait. I felt and believed the call to teach and waited for the right doors to open. God made it clear that this was the way He would have me go.

I became a hairstylist in 2006; it was a creative job I enjoyed and a means for continuing in my education. After gaining an Associate’s Degree in Arts of Education I entered the Education program at Calvin College the fall of 2009. Challenging teaching placements in the Grand Rapids area gave me the experience and confidence to apply to the Southern California student teaching program at Calvin College. I was accepted and went on to spend 15 weeks at Redlands Christian School, a CSI pre-K through 8th grade, in Redlands, California. While practicing my student teaching, I was offered a position at Covenant to teach World History and English.

"Teaching here at CCHS is the culmination of God’s faithful council and years of work and waiting. I am currently teaching Freshmen World History Survey, Freshmen English, Senior Global Issues (a history of current events course), and Senior Journalism, which coincides with the production of the yearbook.

Changes over the course of this past year have included my name, as I am now Mrs. VanOverloop rather than Miss Looyenga, when in December of 2015 I married Derek VanOverloop. I also made a return to coaching freshmen volleyball in the fall. It is a joy to see the work that is done in this school and I look forward each year to the challenge of educating Covenant youth."
